Modern Patio Cover & Outdoor Kitchen in West University, Houston

Outdoor living looks a little different for every family. For these homeowners in the area of West University, in Houston, an unused swimming pool was taking up most of their backyard without providing the outdoor space they really wanted. After removing the pool, they finally had the opportunity to rethink the backyard completely. The result is a custom modern patio cover & outdoor kitchen in West University, Houston. designed to complement their stucco home and create a comfortable space for cooking, dining, entertaining, and relaxing throughout the year.

From an Unused Pool to a Spacious Outdoor Living Area

Before this transformation, the backyard was dominated by a swimming pool the homeowners rarely used. With the pool taking up most of the available space, there wasn’t enough room to build the large covered patio they wanted.

Removing the pool opened up an entirely new possibility for the backyard.

The homeowners now have a covered outdoor space to cook, dine, entertain friends and family, and simply relax.

It’s a great example of how the right backyard renovation can completely change the way a family uses their home.

A Modern Patio Cover Designed to Match the Home

One of our priorities with every HHI Patio Covers project is making the new structure feel like it belongs with the original home.

This West University home features a clean, modern exterior with a stucco finish. We carried that same style into the new patio cover so the addition would blend naturally with the home’s architecture.

Rather than looking like a patio cover that was added years later, the finished structure feels like a natural extension of the home.

The patio cover features 15” x 15” stucco columns, creating substantial architectural lines while maintaining the clean, contemporary appearance of the house.

A Modern Stone Outdoor Kitchen

The new outdoor living space also includes a custom split-stone outdoor kitchen, adding texture and contrast against the smooth stucco finishes.

The outdoor kitchen gives the homeowners a dedicated place to cook while still being part of everything happening outside.

Instead of preparing dinner indoors while everyone else enjoys the patio, the family can now cook, eat, and entertain together in one space.

The combination of stone, stucco, travertine, and the home’s modern architecture gives the entire backyard a polished, upscale appearance.

Travertine Flooring for a Finished Look

For the flooring, the homeowners selected travertine, which works beautifully with the light, neutral finishes throughout the project.

Travertine brings natural texture and warmth to the outdoor space while maintaining the sophisticated look of the home.

It also helps visually connect the different areas of the patio, creating one large and inviting outdoor entertaining space.

Tongue-and-Groove Ceiling for a Light and Airy Feel

The ceiling was upgraded to tongue-and-groove, adding another architectural detail to the patio cover.

Instead of using a darker wood finish, the tongue-and-groove ceiling was painted in a light color that complements the exterior of the home.

This was an important design choice for this particular project. The lighter ceiling helps the covered area feel bright, open, and airy, while still providing the shade Houston homeowners need.

The finished ceiling also gives the patio a more refined appearance when viewed from both the backyard and inside the home.

Modern Lighting and Comfortable Details

Lighting can completely change how an outdoor space feels after sunset, so several lighting elements were incorporated into the design.

The patio includes recessed LED lighting throughout the ceiling for clean, functional illumination. Modern lanterns were also installed on the columns to complement the contemporary architecture of the home.

A ceiling fan adds airflow and makes the covered area more comfortable during Houston’s warmer months.

Together, these details allow the homeowners to enjoy the patio well beyond daylight hours.

An Outdoor Space Designed for Every Season

The homeowners finished the space with beautiful outdoor seating and a fire pit, creating a comfortable conversation area beyond the outdoor kitchen and dining space.

During cooler Houston evenings, the fire pit provides a warm place for the family to gather and relax.

During the warmer months, the covered roof, ceiling fan, and shade help make spending time outside much more comfortable.

The goal was to create an outdoor living space the family can comfortably enjoy throughout the year.

A Complete Backyard Transformation in West University

The backyard was once underused, with a pool that no longer fit the family’s lifestyle. Now, it’s a beautiful extension of their home.

The homeowners now have room to cook dinner, dine outdoors, entertain guests, gather around the fire pit, and simply enjoy their backyard again.

Most importantly, every detail was selected to complement the modern architecture of the existing home.

Every detail works together, from the stucco columns and outdoor kitchen to the travertine flooring and tongue-and-groove ceiling. Modern lighting and a fire pit complete the cohesive design.
